The Future of Union for Mediterranean in terms of Regional Cooperation

The Euro-Mediterranean Partnership, formerly known as the Barcelona Process, was re-launched in 2008 as the Union for the Mediterranean at the Paris Summit for the Mediterranean in July. The Partnership now includes all 27 member states of the European Union, along with 16 partners across the Southern Mediterranean and the Middle East. A Union for European with countries in the Mediterranean region seeks to promote accelerated economic growth. The aim of re-launching is to infuse a new vitality and to raise the political level of the strategic relationship between the EU and its southern neighbors. In this context, six priority projects are also identified in this meeting. Main focus of the Union for the Mediterranean is to deal with energy, security, counter-terrorism, immigration and trade. Creation of a Euro-Mediterranean free-trade area will also impact on the environment and agriculture in the region. This paper reviews the literature and statistically evaluates the future of Union for Mediterranean in terms of regional cooperation.
