Abstract

Word formation is a process of creating new words with some processes such as derivation, abbreviation, acronym, compounding, generified words, borrowing, and blending. In our always changing world it becomes a need for the languages to create new words. This paper aims to start with the language itself. Some definitions of language are given, and the fundamental unit of language, word, is defined, as an answer to the question; “What is a word?” Another part deals with “Neologisms: Creating new words” After this part, six processes of word formation; derivation, abbreviation, acronym, compounding, generified words and borrowing are explained and related examples from both English and Turkish are given by which it is aimed to propose a general approach to word formation processes in English and Turkish.
